Mr. Eric Oduro, the Executive Director of the Chartered Institute of Tax Law and Forensic Accountants (CITLFA), has issued a clarion call to forensic accountants to bolster the state’s fight against financial malpractice by providing high-quality, irrefutable evidence for the prosecution of cyber fraud and financial crimes.
Speaking at the Institute’s 3rd graduation ceremony held at the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) last Friday, Mr. Oduro emphasized that the success of the judicial system in tackling financial crime depends heavily on the precision of forensic reports.
“You are the nation’s silent watchdogs,” Mr. Oduro told the graduates. “Your role is to uncover the truth behind complex financial crimes and safeguard the country’s integrity. By providing watertight evidence, you strengthen the hands of our courts and national institutions.”
The “Third Force” in Justice During the event, which was themed “Forensic Issues at the Workplace: Fighting Tax Fraud, Financial Crimes, and Misconducts in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises,” Mr. Oduro unveiled the institute’s new mantra: “Forensic Accounting – The 3rd Force.” He positioned the profession as an essential pillar working alongside law enforcement and the judiciary to ensure accountability and transparency in Ghana.
Vulnerability of SMEs The Guest of Honour and Dean of the GCTU Business School, Prof. George Oppong Appiagye Ampong, highlighted the risks faced by Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). He warned that while SMEs might seem too small for extensive oversight, they are frequently crippled by internal fraud.
“SMEs are not too small to fail due to internal financial misconduct,” Prof. Ampong cautioned, urging the new professionals to extend their expertise to help stabilize the small business sector.
Call to Professionalism The Chairman of the CITLFA Council, Mr. Kwaku Nkrumah, reminded the new cohort that their certifications in forensic accounting, tax law, and cybercrime investigation carry significant weight. He urged them to maintain the highest standards of integrity and diligence, noting that they have earned a “responsibility” rather than just a title.
The ceremony, attended by representatives from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD), featured a panel discussion on modern strategies for combating tax fraud and cybercrime. It also celebrated the growing partnership between CITLFA and GCTU in bridging the gap between academic theory and industry practice.
